This is actually an incredibly accurate depiction of an autistic girl getting sensory overload. She even actively pushes the trigger out of her face and gets away from it when things became too much.

Note: I apologize for lack of subtitles but you really don’t need to know what is being said to understand what Ruki is experiencing.

Digimon Tamers, episode 18

For context, Ruki (dub: Rika) is a hot-headed girl with a short temper, and it’s not uncommon for her to walk away in the middle of a conversation or say what’s on her mind with little to no regard for other people’s feelings. By the time this scene takes place, she is already worked up and stressed because her Digimon partner left the night before in order to join forces with the enemy. On top of that, Ruki was forced into this photoshoot/camera test by her mother and her mother’s manager, who claimed “It’s because you have such clear features that you can wear [western style] clothes. There aren’t many girls who can look good in clothes like those.”

Now on to the translation!

Manager: It’ll be a short camera test. [chuckles]

Photographer: You have cute eyes.

Manager: Would you like to have a job like your mother’s? (Ruki’s mother is a professional model)

Ruki: Nope.

[mother grunts in frustration]

Photographer: Strobe test. [light flashes] Ready? Now, just act natural. We’ll start without the strobe. [takes photos] Good, keep it up. [takes photos] Nice! Can you take the hat off and look at the camera? [takes photos] Nice job. Okay!

[Ruki winces]

Photographer: Don’t move. Now we’ll use the strobe. Don’t close your eyes. [light flashes] Can you lift your chin a bit?

[light flashes, Ruki breathes heavily, camera snaps, Ruki screams and shoves the photographer]

Mother: Ruki?!

Afterwards, Ruki returns home to change clothes then spends the rest of the day wandering around town, likely in search of her Digimon partner. When confronted about it, her mother asks, “What kind of elementary school girl takes walks this late?!” Ruki points to herself and says, “This one,” before walking away.
